Pereiopods
Me and the boss are trying to tie up the local names of our freshwater shrimps with their scientific names and along the way are in contact with Alex, a shrimp expert at Harvard who, after examining the photo below, told us the following:
"These are definitely Atya -- the specimen at top in the first photo is a male (the robust pereiopods with peglike protrusions are a giveaway), while the second appears to be a female, perhaps of the very same species."
What the hell are PEREIOPODS we asked ourselves and duly found out on Wikipedia.
Ok, "So what?" you say.
But did you know this ...
"The pereiopods bear the sexual organs, which are the third pereiopod in the female and the fifth pereiopod in the male."
Well, well ... live and learn! Decapod sex must be a wondrous thing!
