Col. Gaddafi's Last Refuge

Rather than heading over the desert to Algeria, Niger or Burkina Fasso, I think Colonel Gaddafi should consider being a guest of São Tomé e Príncipe where the Libyan African Arab Investment Co. has promised a multistorey 5-Star hotel on a prime downtown site.

Only he will have to build it first!

Pissing in the Street

Some years ago the local television station conducted a propaganda caampaign condemning the act of urinating in public places ... they filmed and broadcast people in the act and addressed them as "Senhor Porco" (Mr. Pig).

The Ministry of Employment got brand new offices in the centre of town with a very nice basalt wall around it ... which was promptly defaced with the above graffiti "It is forbidden to urinate."

Note the lack of a "here" ... so cross your legs!

Religious Landscapes

I am not religious, or rather no longer. However, the UK's churches are an enormous resource - historical, cultural, architectural etc etc.I take great pleasure in visiting a small rural medieval church and imagining what it has seen. See this marvellous collection of photos of UK churches by Mark Fairhurst.

"I went back a few hundred years and imagined being a medieval peasant. To visit one of these huge cathedrals for the very first time, it must have looked like something had landed from another planet - totally out of this world."
