Pharmaceutical advertising
I understand that para-acetylaminophenol and 2-acetoxybenzoic acid are a bit of a mouthful to pronounce and remember - so have been simplified to paracetamol and aspirin respectively.
It must be great fun to work in the department of the parmaceutical multinational that invents the names of their new concoctions. Some seem to have a vague relationship to their therapeutic properties or ingredients but others are beyond imagination ... and who would have thought that Suprofen, reminiscent of the name Ibuprofen (iso-butyl-propanoic-phenolic acid), is in fact plain old paracetamol!
